Heavy downpour has been continuing across several nooks and corners of Kerala since the last few weeks. This immense rain has led to a rise in the water level in the Periyar river causing panic among the people living in Kerala. On Tuesday morning, the Aluva MahaDeva Temple was submerged which added more distress to the already worsened situation across the state. As aired on TV, devotees seemed to be stuck inside the temple due to the premises being completely flooded.
According to the India Meteorological Department, downpour is supposed to continue in the northern regions of Kerala till 19th July. The Meteorological Department has already issued an orange alert in five different districts - Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasragod on Tuesday. Also, simultaneously yellow alert has been issued across seven other districts in the state namely - Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad.
As per reports the rain is still continuing in the district of Kozhikode including the hilly regions of Nadapuram, Mavoor and Kuttiyadi. This natural disaster has led to a two-storeyed building collapsing at Nadapuram. Though, fortunately this has not led to any casualties. Two other houses at Thengilakadavu and Kanniparamba were partially collapsed simultaneously. The Karuvarakundu region of the district has also been reportedly affected by mudslides.
This continuous rain and strong gust of winds has led to several trees being uprooted and disrupting the traffic across the state. Also, supply of power has faced a huge disruption in different regions of the state. Especially, in the district of Thamarassery and Kuttiyadi ghat roads, traffic faced a huge bumper as uprooted trees led to road blockage. In Pathanamthitta, 20 houses have been damaged due to several trees being uprooted by the strong gust of winds. Besides this, lightning has struck in the Kalloorkad area of Muvattupuzha causing severe damage. A teak tree fell over two running pickup vans in Angamaly yet the lives of the two drivers were saved by a narrow escape.
Meanwhile, in the Kozhikode District, the District Collector has declared a holiday for the educational institutions from 17th July. This has also been issued across the districts of Palakkad, Idukki, Alappuzha, Kannur, Thrissur, Kottayam and Wayanad. This applies to the educational institutions including the Anganwadi and professional colleges, Though, this does not apply to the MRS Schools.
This heavy downpour has been caused due to a low-pressure formation over the Bay of Bengal off the coast of Odisha, Also, there is a possibility of another depression to be formed over the Midwest of the Bay of Bengal on the 19th of July. This heavy rain is supposed to continue till Friday.
Due to increasing rise in water level in the Periyar river, all the shutters at Bhoothathankettu Dam were opened on Monday evening. The four shutters at the center of the dam are up by 5 meters each, and the others by 50 centimeters each.
