Climate Action in Full Swing: UN's July 2023 Goal of the Month -written by Poonam Chanchlani (BCA, Data Science)

The latest installment of the  "Goal of the Month" series focuses on the socioeconomic aspects of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development . The July edition delves into the profound implications of the World Economic Situation and Prospects report, projecting global economic growth at 2.3% for 2023, significantly lower than the pre-COVID-19 average of 3.1%. These figures underscore the uphill battle in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

July plays host to two pivotal events. The High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (10-19 July) and the release of the SDGs Report 2023: Special Edition (10 July) take center stage, amplifying global efforts to accelerate SDG-related action.

As we approach the halfway point to the 2030 deadline, the SDGs face critical challenges. The 2023 SDGs Report reveals that merely 12% of targets are on track, over 50% show varying degrees of deviation, and approximately 30% have stagnated or regressed from their 2015 benchmarks. Urgent intervention is imperative, as projections indicate that 575 million people will still endure extreme poverty in 2030. Equally concerning, hunger levels are resurging to heights not seen since 2005.

Gender equality remains a distant goal, with a staggering 286 years required to close legal protection gaps. Widening wealth disparities disproportionately burden vulnerable nations. Developing countries grapple with disproportionately high borrowing costs, exposing the failure of the international financial architecture to provide a safety net. UN Secretary-General António Guterres, at the Paris Summit on New Global Financing Pact, urged for immediate action in the form of a $500 billion annual SDG Stimulus for sustainable development and climate action investments.

Despite challenges, glimmers of progress emerge. Initial efforts following SDG adoption saw reductions in extreme poverty and child mortality rates, as well as advancements in combating diseases like HIV and hepatitis.

Anticipation builds for the SDG Summit in September, following the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in July. These events aim to ignite a profound shift in commitment, solidarity, financing, and action, steering the world toward a brighter, more sustainable trajectory.
