Introduction:

A significant medical milestone is on the horizon in Karnataka, India, as Narayana Nethralaya prepares to launch human trials for gene therapy. This groundbreaking research, initiated a decade ago under the visionary guidance of its founder, Dr. K Bhujang Shetty, aims to tackle genetic disorders that have long eluded effective treatment. The trials, scheduled to commence by the end of December, mark a historic moment for India's medical community and those afflicted by conditions such as keratoconus, corneal dystrophy, and Stargardt retinal disease.

 

Addressing a Pressing Need:

India faces a substantial burden of genetic disorders, affecting an estimated one in 2,000 to one in 10,000 individuals. Dr. Rohit Shetty, Chairman of Narayana Nethralaya, underscores the urgency of studying gene therapy for multiple diseases. This not only offers hope for conditions previously deemed incurable but also holds the potential to prevent genetic transmission from one generation to the next.
 

Decades of Dedication:

Over the past ten years, extensive research has been conducted to identify defective genes in approximately 5,000-6,000 individuals across various genetic disorders. Twelve diseases, including corneal dystrophy, night blindness, and muscular dystrophy, have been prioritized for gene therapy. Moreover, close to 700-1,000 individuals suffering from these conditions have been identified as candidates for the trials. Narayana Nethralaya's ambitious vision extends beyond these initial diseases, with plans to address over 60 genetic disorders, including formidable challenges like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
 

A Ray of Hope for "Rare and Neglected" Diseases:

India is home to an estimated 7 million "rare and neglected" disease patients who could benefit from gene therapy. Until now, this innovative treatment has been exorbitantly expensive, costing between $1-3.4 million per patient and only available in developed countries. However, Narayana Nethralaya aims to change this by leveraging indigenously developed vectors and production processes, potentially reducing the cost to 1/20th - 1/50th of international standards.

 

A Decade of Investment and Innovation:

The journey towards gene therapy began ten years ago, and Narayana Nethralaya has invested approximately Rs 150 crore in research and infrastructure. Multiple state-of-the-art laboratories have been established to facilitate research-driven patient outcomes.
