Revolutionizing Vaccine Delivery: Ultrasound Propels Vaccines Through the Skin Sans Needles - written by Harsha varthini.B (Managing Editor, Bisjhintus News)

Researchers at the University of Oxford have devised a needle-free method of vaccine delivery that utilizes ultrasound. This innovative approach not only eliminates the discomfort associated with needles but also proves effective in transporting vaccine molecules through the skin.

To craft this needle-free vaccine delivery system, Darcy Dunn-Lawless and his team combined vaccine molecules with minuscule, cup-shaped protein molecules. This concoction was then applied to the skin of mice, and ultrasound, akin to that used in sonograms, was employed for approximately a minute and a half.

Initially, the ultrasound facilitated the penetration of the mixture into the upper layers of the skin, where the unique shape of the protein molecules induced the formation of bubbles. With continued exposure to ultrasound, these bubbles burst, propelling the vaccine deeper into the skin. Notably, as the experiment progressed, the bursting bubbles also aided in the removal of dead skin cells, enhancing skin permeability and facilitating the passage of more vaccine molecules.

While traditional needle-based vaccinations reach the muscles beneath the skin, the ultrasound technique achieves delivery exclusively to the upper skin layers. Despite this more shallow penetration, Dunn-Lawless asserts that it is adequate for achieving immunization. This revolutionary method not only promises a less painful and needle-free vaccine administration but also opens new avenues for advancing the efficiency and comfort of immunization processes in the future.
