Sunita Lyn Williams is an American astronaut who was born to Deepak Pandya, an Indian-American neuroanatomist. She was going to make history on May 7th as the only person to travel into space for the third time, but her mission was halted shortly before take-off owing to a severe malfunction.

Sunita Williams, 58, holds the record for the most spacewalks by a woman, with seven, and the longest spacewalk time for a woman, 50 hours and 40 minutes. Throughout her career, she has spent 322 days in space and flown over 30 different planes.

 

Captain Williams, who was scheduled to serve as a mission pilot, was given the choice to name the spacecraft she would travel in, and she chose "Calypso.".

When asked why she picked this name, she responded via X's (previously Twitter) profile, stating that she chose it due to her love of the oceans and Jacques Cousteau's ship "Calypso," which sailed across the world.

Why was the “Calypso” spacecraft delayed?

 

The Calypso spacecraft, commonly referred to as the Boeing Starliner, has been delayed for a variety of reasons. One of the primary causes for the delay was an overactive oxygen valve on the Atlas V rocket's Centaur upper stage, which caused a one-day delay in launch. Furthermore, the spacecraft has seen many delays since its initial launch in 2019, with the most recent being related to the Boeing Crewed Flight Test, which is set to take place in May 2024.
