What is Pareidolia and how does it impact our brain? Our brains are wired to detect faces, even in everyday objects, a phenomenon known as "face pareidolia." Remarkably, recent research conducted at UNSW Sydney shows that the same visual mechanisms in our brains that process real faces are used to process these "fake" ones. Even objects that are not remotely humanlike can trigger our brains to perceive them as faces. In fact, there are countless memes and web pages devoted to the many examples of face pareidolia found in everyday objects, as documented by users from around the world on social media sites.

 

Lead researcher Dr Colin Palmer, from UNSW Science's School of Psychology, explains that these objects not only resemble faces but also convey personality or social meaning, such as when the windows of a house appear to be two watching eyes, or a capsicum appears to have a happy expression.

 

But why does face pareidolia occur? According to psychologists, understanding face perception is key to answering this question. Although human faces exhibit variations, they all share common features, such as the relative positioning of the eyes and the mouth.


The human brain is highly attuned to the basic pattern of features that define the human face, which likely explains why we tend to notice pareidolia objects that resemble faces, according to research from the reports. However, recognizing who a person is and interpreting their facial expressions are also critical parts of face perception, requiring specialized brain mechanisms to extract important social information from what we see. To test whether the same mechanisms are activated during face pareidolia, researchers used the process of sensory adaptation, which showed that exposure to faces with a particular direction of gaze can change the perception of gaze direction in subsequent faces. This habituation process in the brain has been noted in past studies.


The study not only provides evidence on how our brains perceive faces but also has the potential to prompt new inquiries regarding cognitive conditions associated with recognizing faces.


Pareidolia is not necessarily harmful, and it is a natural cognitive process that helps us recognize and interpret visual information in our environment. However, in some cases, it can lead to irrational beliefs or delusions, particularly when people see religious or supernatural symbols in ordinary objects.


It occurs a good amount of time when one experiences this phenomenon. However, it becomes a negative shade in our lives. Humans are naturally habituated to see patterns and absurd visuals processed by their mind in the most random and day-to-day life commodities, no harm in that. When the occurrence of Pareidolia increases, then the mind of that person plays tricks. It ruptures the vision of reality and the ability of grasping what actually is going on or taking place in the time.


For example, some people may see the face of Jesus in a piece of toast or the image of the Virgin Mary in a tree trunk. Such experiences can lead to superstitions, false beliefs, or even extreme behaviors. In addition, pareidolia can also affect the reliability of eyewitness testimony in criminal investigations, as people may misinterpret or fabricate details based on their subjective perceptions.


Overall, while pareidolia is a fascinating phenomenon, it is important to be aware of its potential effects on our beliefs and actions, and to approach it with a critical and rational mindset.
